Bart Hassam is the champion of the FTD World Cup 2019!

FINAL PARADE OF NATIONS cover

23 talented competitors gave it their all over the course of 3 action-packed days. But it was the Australian candidate, floral designer Bart Hassam, who triumphed in the prestigious FTD World Cup.

There were four preliminary championship tasks which the 23 designers had to complete: an architecture-inspired design; a table arrangement for two; a hand-tied bouquet, and a surprise, seasonal piece. After those 4 rounds were judged, a smaller group of 10 florists went on to the semi-finals.

The semi-finalists completed another surprise design task the next day. A gala dinner was held that evening, during which the five finalists were announced. Those then competed live on stage in front of more than 600 guests, making for a nail-biting final.

The final designs were judged on stage by the professional jury, after which the new World Champion was announced – to lots of cheers from the captive audience.

“This has been a really wonderful experience and I am very grateful for the opportunity that has been given to me,” Hassam said during his acceptance speech. “I know that it is a rare opportunity for anyone from any country, and I am thankful.”

The World Cup 2019 used the well-established Florint 100-points standardized system for its scoring, we are proud to say. FTD partnered with Florint to ensure an optimally professional judging process.

The first runner-up in the World Cup 2019 is Natalia Zhizhko from Russia. Readers may well remember her as the champion of Florint’s 2011 Europa Cup in the Czech Republic.

The third-place finish went to Tamás Mezöffy from Hungary. Coincidentally, he is the reigning Europa Cup champion, having won the contest in 2016 in Genova, Italy!

“Over the last year, all you think about is this. All you talk to your friends about, is this. All you spend your money on,” Hassam commented on his win. “So I think we all should be grateful, because this opportunity doesn’t happen to many people.”

Alongside the title of ‘Florist Champion’, Hassam takes a massive $17,000 prize home to Australia.

FTD was selected to host this year’s competition two years ago, by the Interflora Board of Directors. The company chose The Philadelphia Flower Show as the venue. A clever move, as the famous show draws hundreds of thousands of flower lovers every year.
