Competitions: innovation and promotion

It is no coincidence that many crafts organize competitions in craftsmanship at the regional, national and international level. Competitions are a breeding ground for innovations as people are challenged to explore new techniques, styles, use of material and such. And innovation is of utmost importance for the survival of businesses. Competitions are also an important means to promote the craft or the branch to the general public, as well as to youngsters orientating themselves regarding their future profession.

Since the founding of Florint in 1956, much effort has been put into the organisation of a European Competition for florists. This resulted in a four-yearly top-event; the European Championship. The last Europa Cups were organised in 2011 in Havirov (Czech Republic), in 2007 in Velenje (Slovenia) and in 2003 in Salamanca (Spain). The Europa Cup certainly is an absolute highlight in the field of floristry; an event of which it has been said that its quality level even surpasses that of the Interflora Worldcup.

Just like the Europa Cup, the two-yearly Eurofleurs competition for young florists has also become a contest that attracts plenty of interest from many European countries. The first Young European Florist Competition took place in Great Britain in January 1998. This first “Eurofleurs” contest was a genuine success from the start. Via the editions in Germany, Italy, Hungary, the Netherlands and Belgium, Eurofleurs has now developed into a true European Cup for young florists. The latest incarnation took place in Great Britain in July of 2010, and was a spectacular success as well. The idea of combining it with the Tatton Park Flower Show event proved to be incredibly rewarding.
